According to new research conducted by eBay, classic
bootcut style jeans are beating sales of skinny and flared denim jeans by over three times the amount. Whereas the A-list seem to fall into two distinct denim camps, the skinny or the catwalk flare,
it seems that when it comes to shopping for jeans online there is no traditional ‘it’ jean.
Among
the three million pairs of jeans purchased on
eBay.com over the past year, 793,289 pairs were
bootcut, over three times more than the next best-selling style. Coming in second was straight leg jeans with 215,353 pairs sold, with skinny jeans taking third place with 214,405 pairs. Closely following in fourth place is flares, which have seen a comeback over the past 12-months due to the Seventies influences seen on the runway. However, what was surprising was that denim leggings or
‘jeggings’ as they are better known, the latest style to hit the market, came in at only tenth place with just 11,616 pairs sold.
“The popularity of the
bootcut is down to the fact that it can be worn at any age, and flatters most body shapes, particularly those with wider hips, specific jean styles come and go all the time, but women will always love their
bootcut jeans,” says Andrea
Linett, eBay Fashion Creative Director. “They're classic, all age-appropriate and are the most forgiving of all styles - especially if you're a bit hippy. The wider hem balances everything
out.”
Other styles in the research included low-rise waistbands, which took fifth spot, followed by relaxed and cropped styles; boyfriend jeans could only manage eighth with just 30,438 pairs sold, and wide leg jeans came in at number nine.
